Leadership Training Workshop in Jessore

On 20th December 2008, 1° Initiative conducted its first ever Leadership Training Workshop in the Abdur Gofur Memorial Secondary School in Laukhali, Jessore.

The workshop consisted of three major events – the flags, the snake game and an interactive session of ideas and perspectives. Grade 9 and 10 students participated in the latter events, while all the rest migrated to the other end of the field for the first.

At the flags, the students were divided into two teams who had to work together in an orderly fashion and maintain discipline, in order to hand-paint two Bangladesh flags. The snake game was another team-building activity, involving maintaining a human chain while running around and trying to add more people to the chain. Everyone had to work together to hold on. It also served as an ice-breaker between the 1di members and the workshop participants, so they were all at ease by the time the interactive session began. The 80 students participating in this session were divided between two classrooms – ‘Health and Lifestyle Management’ and ‘Education’. At the end of 30 minutes the groups swapped classes. While the others engaged the youngsters in other small team-building activities, the classrooms fired up discussions on opportunities for all, arsenic-free societies, career building, and disease prevention.

As the flags dried under the inconspicuous winter sun, the 1° team gathered inside the auditorium for the closing ceremony. After a day of eyes opening to new possibilities, the students were inspired to dream, to speak up. They made their voices heard as they requested their patron to apply their school as a centre for SSC examinations. In the span of a few hours and the first ever 1° Initiative Leadership Training workshop was able to inform, inspire and instill hope in youths and live up to the organization’s motto set three years ago by eight teenagers. Impossible was just another word for new beginnings.
